Lenovo G480 Laptop Review
I just bought a brand new Lenovo laptop.
It's from JIB Computer Group in Computer Plaza on the north side of the Chiang Mai moat road. I wrote a post about where to buy laptops from and how to get free stuff when you buy one here. This post is a review of my new Lenovo laptop.
We're on a budget. We promised ourselves we wouldn't spend more than 15,000 baht. So of course, we spent more than that - 15,490 baht on a brand new Lenovo G480 laptop with DVD-R drive - which means easy installation of The Sims 3 and Batman: Arkham Asylum. Lenovo is a Thai brand of computers. I was initially wary of buying this brand because I'd never really heard of it before and the fact that it's pretty bulky compared to more well known brands such as Asus.
So what swayed me?
It was significantly cheaper than internationally branded laptops with similar specifications. We found a great website that ranked the speeds of CPUs. Just because one computer boasts a speed of 2.4ghz, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's faster than one that's 2ghz. It depends on what type of processor it is, and also witchcraft.
We took photographs of all the available laptops in JIB, then went home and did some research. Turns out that the processor ranks 4306 out of 14,586 (the higher the better). That might not seem so high, but it's a higher ranking than the processors used in the internationally branded laptops that were available in our price range. It had 4GB of ram with space for another 4. It came with a pretty good Geforce GT635M 2GB graphics card. I would have had to pay at least 6,000 baht more to get an internationally branded laptop with the same specifications.

It is bulkier than most very new laptops, but you do get a DVD-R drive. It weighs 2.10kg. It's quiet - I can barely hear it. It turns on in about 10 seconds. It turns off in about 3. The battery doesn't last that long - around 3-4 hours, but it recharges quickly. The keyboard is nice to use. Other people have said that they dislike the touchpad, but I find it fine. If you find yourself brushing it by accident whilst you type, it's easy to turn on and off (Fn + F6).
So far, so good. Nothing has broken, I didn't go too far over our budget, all the programs and software work fine, and it runs the games I bought for it easily.
