Baa Baa Black Cafe Chiang Mai Review

I love the Samoeng Loop motorbike trip, and chocolate.

Baa Baa Black Cafe in Mae Rim is a perfect end to one of the best motorbike tours in the area. And it's only half an hour from Chiang Mai.

Sit in the garden at Baa Baa Black Cafe under the shade of a tree and try not to smile. I don't think you'll manage it.

Baa Baa Black Cafe is in the beautiful grounds of the Mae Rim Lagoon Hotel. Make time to explore the garden because it's really pretty. It felt like a perfect date - the sun shining, beautiful atmosphere, good food and drink and easy, relaxed conversation. Definitely not just for couples though - I take my mates here for a laid back taste of Thailand.

Delicious and unique food

Their Thai food is some of the nicest I've had in Chiang Mai. A lot of the dishes are recipes passed from the owners' grandma, and the place certainly seems to pride itself in serving authentic old-fashioned Thai food that you might not find elsewhere. I had Yum Chicken, which was delicious and unique - I haven't had anything like it before. As for the Western food, well, Andy may have found a rival to The Best Veggie Burger in Chiang Mai (at U.N. Irish Pub and Restaurant) at Baa Baa Black Cafe. This dish was three little mushroomy burgers on delicious home made bread with chips. If the chips were homemade and there were more of them, it would have been perfect. There were plenty of vegetarian options.

If you need a chocolate fix and it's a treat day, you should absolutely order the enticingly named Guilty Chocolate drink. I have no idea how they can make it that chocolatey. There are soft melty chocolate bits in it. Perhaps the chefs are secretly wizards. It goes particularly well with a warmed chocolate brownie or the sinfully delicious half baked. OH MY GOSH, HALF BAKED. It's one of the best things I've ever eaten.

I don't know why it's called Baa Baa Black but my theory is that it would be a very lovely place for a sheep to live. That must be it.

Address
65/7 Moo 6 Mae Rim-Samerng (Old Road) Tumbol Rimtai Ampur Mae Rim, Chiang Mai, Thailand

How to get there from Chiang Mai
Drive up Changphuak Road and keep going onto Route 107. Drive in a straight line past Macro and under a pedestrian bridge til you reach Route 1096 and turn left at the lights, down the Mae Rim-Samoeng Road (which is the tail end of the loop). It doesn't look like a main road at all so keep your eyes peeled. Look out for a sign for Baa Baa Black Cafe or Mae Rim Lagoon Hotel. Turn down the bumpy brick road and park outside the cafe.

It took us about half an hour to get there on our motorbike: Map
